Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April, 1972. Jill Scott was raised by both her grandmother and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott graduated from The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. There, Scott worked at two different jobs while taking classes in secondary education. She wanted to be the high school's English teacher. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of university. She began her career as a spoken word artist performing her own pieces at live poetry readings and later joined forces with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. In Roots' performance she showed herself to be an artist. After that, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
